5 things to do instead of a morning work worksheet

15 October 2016

Do you want to spice up your morning routine?  Although morning work worksheets, serve their purpose, I have found a numerous amount of other activities that can meet the needs of your students and get your students excited to come to class everyday!! Morning work does a great job spiraling skills, however, you can do that with these ideas too!

Flipped classrooms are wonderful!! A flipped classroom allows students to work at their own pace and you get the chance to meet one-on-one with students and as small groups.  Here is a little insight our classes' flipped classroom.  Every morning students come in the classroom, unpack, go to the bathroom, turn in homework, and make a lunch choice.  When all of these activities are complete they grab a Chromebook and log into their gmail. Now we are not one-to-one at our school.  But, I begged my third grade coworkers to allow our class to have the Chromebooks in the morning. (Thank goodness)  If you are not one to one you can still do the flipped classroom!  Stay tuned to the end of the posts for more ideas!

Anyways back to the flipped classroom ideas! Once they long into their gmail accounts they log into our classroom google account.  I have the assignments very clearly labeled for students to independently work on their assignment.  A flipped classroom is a video of a lesson followed by an activity. I make a video and an assignment to go with it.  Sometimes the assignment is online and sometimes it is paper based.  Right now we are working on word problems. Below is an example of one assignment.

Students are to watch a video about word problems with too much information.  Students have whiteboards and markers out during the video.  The video has students pause the video, complete the problem, and then the video goes through the answers!!  Great for immediate feedback.  Then students complete the google doc.  Students are to create their own word problems with too much information.
Flipped classrooms are great to incorporate for morning routines!  This is a time to get in extra practice for any skill, students can't wait to come right in to class and get working, and you can work with small groups!
Check out our classroom you tube channel for FREE videos!

Have students work with words!  This is wayyyy easier prep for you and kids love it!  Have a work with words bucket of tool readily available.  Students will come in and immediately get started practicing their words.  To incorporate technology you can have some students use spelling city to practice their words! Now you do not need to find time to practice words during the day!
Here is our work with words bin.
In our bin we have lots of tools! Play dough
Stamps and stamp pads

Scrabble titles

Bendaroos

and a keyboard!  This is a class favorite.  Good keyboarding practice too!

Have a special morning journal!

This is a month journal packet which we are totally in love with in Ms. Schrage's third grade.  You may have a writing prompt on the board for friends who have a hard time picking something to write about but ultimately they can decide who to write about.  These great monthly writing packets come with space for a picture as well!  This way students can write and then add a great picture to go with their writing.  We took it one step farther and we made a grammar rubric to go with our journal packets. As a class, we decided on what we should have in our journals.  Once they have completed their writing, students grade themselves using the rubric. Then, I grade the journals using the same rubric.  I leave a little note.  They can't wait to read the note the next time they write!
We even peer edit once a week with our journals!

Get your students engaged in math centers first thing in the morning!  We have a few different math center choices in the morning.  I absolutely love Hope King's month math centers. This allows a spiral review all year long of skills.  Also EASY differentiation!

During math centers, students can choose to do Hope King's folder choices, independently or with a partner.  Students can play kaboom. To incorporate technology, some students are able to choose math on the computer.  This allows me to meet one on one with students and with groups as well!

These are not from Hope King....I made my own to fit the needs of my students, but kept her idea.  These are not for sale :(

This is a new activity we are doing in our classroom. We are in love!! The discussion post we use after we finish our flipped classroom.  Students finish their flipped classroom activity.  Then, students move onto our discussion post.  Once a week Students are required to read an article of my choice. I get my articles online from Newsela, Tween tribune, and dogonews. Students read the article.  Then I make a google form for comprehension questions.  After they complete the comprehension questions, students answer a question, in a paragraph.  I make up the question. This is the discussion portion.  Students answer the question.  Then, students are required to comment on two of their classmates's posts.  Here is an example of our discussion post!
Again we access this through classroom google but not mandatory!
You see here the google forms of comprehension questions and the article on the bottom.  Then students posts a comment to answer the question. The question they are answering is" Describe the four things a plant needs to live." They are to answer this question in at least four sentences.

Then students are to comment on one of their classmates' posts.

This is meeting soo many standards!! Collaborating, researching, and writing!

Lots of these ideas can be modified.  For example, if you are not one to one, these activities can still be done!  For example, you could do all 5 of these activities. Group your students into five "ish" groups. Have students go to one activity a day!

I hope we gave you a few more ideas other than just using that boring oh morning work worksheet!

Technology Tuesday; Kahoot

26 April 2016

This is not an app!  It actually can be used on ANY device for ANY subject because it is an internet site! Very easy to use and kid friendly as well!  With all things I like to keep my kiddos on their toes and mix it up!

First thing is first.  Make a kahoot to align with your current skills you are teaching.  Go to creat.kahoot.  You will have to have a username and password for the site ( just like every site or app we use #notonemorepassoword!) It is free!  Once you have a username and password your main page will look like this.

From this page you will

You have three options of layouts. You can make a quiz, discussion, or a survey.  I mostly use the quiz kahoots however, the discussion are great for leading books discussions or topics especially for older children.  Surveys are great to be used when graphing and taking polls!
Today we are going to walk through how to create a quiz. Begin by clicking quiz! You will be asked to give your quiz a name and then brought the next page.

From here you can save, add as many questions as you wish, videos, and more!

Pretty easy!  The best part is the ending! When yo have complete your Kahoot press save and continue.

I love that you can share your kahoot with your colleagues!  We like to take turns making kahoots! :)

Now you're ready to play with your class! You need to be on the screen above and click play now.  You must have this screen up the entire time you are playing.  Once you hit play now you will choose team playing to have multiple students to one device or one to one. We have done both and love either!  Next your will press play now then ....

Your teams or your one to one players will open an internet borrower and go to kahoot.it Here it will look like this and they will enter the class code you have on your screen.

As players enter the game their names will appear on your screen. Once you see everyone is logged on press start!  This game is amazing for a quick assessment and gives you a graph of correct answers and incorrect answers by each student!

You can download a chart of your student answers by clicking your profile, my results and then download!  This is an amazing way to review for a test or to mix up a boring worksheet with a fun game!  Again you DO NOT have to be one to one or even have iPads! This can be played with teams and on any device with internet access!  If you have any questions please leave a comment or email me and I can help you!

Technology Tuesday; Go Animate!

19 April 2016
Okay this week's Technology Tuesday is not an app! It is actually a website. The website does not work on iPads either.  (Which was a downfall for us at times, but I definitely made time to go to the computer lab because my kiddos LOVED it!

Go Animate is a video making website!  Very easy to use and the kiddos picked up on it fast! There is a catch!  We signed up for 14-day trial.  Therefore, we had to finish our videos in 14 days.  It is possible! You just have to make the videos a priority.  After 14 days your videos will not be accessible unless you purchase to use the site.  Keep reading to see how we saved our videos for free :).

Once you open Go Animate this screen will appear.
You are being asked to sign up for a free trial. Just do it! You will love it!  Once you sign up for the free trial you a ready to start creating.  I first created my own video to show my kiddos how AWESOME this site was.  Then together we created all the same video.  This was so I could teach how to use the site first. They had some choices but our videos were all about the same. This teaching part took about 3 half hour sessions to complete.  Logging in can be a process (especially with younger kiddos-I have third grade)
At this time we were learning about black history month.  We were going to be creating a wax museum with our people of choice.  What better addition than a video! Here is an example!

Here are a few tricks I learned with the site!
This screen will appear and you want to make a video.
There are a TON of different templates to choose from!  It really doesn't matter which on you choose because you can get the options from all templates once you start creating.
This is your blank template ready to be edited.

You can do as much or as little as you want! That is what is so awesome to see from your kiddos!  Some friends will really get into adding special animations and some will not!  That's okay!

Here is what you see!

Alright some of the options are pretty easy.  However, some of the options I have learned through experience! Let's start with the background.  If you want to change the background at any time click the background (the green right now)-make sure you clear a clear space.  It will look like this once you click it.
Click color to change the color or click background swap for a different background or texture.  Once you are happy with the background for this scene you have to click the x to get back to the original screen!
If you would like to upload your own background you can...
-----------How to make a character---------
If you do not like the character on the page simply click the character and press delete.  Then press the character button and there are lots to choose from!  My kiddos wanted to customize their character and here is how you do that!

Make sure you save before making a character! After you design your character you will be brought to a new web page.  From here you must go back into your video.  Click characters and find your character under lil peeps.

My favorite part of these videos is adding animations!  You can add animations to anything by click on whatever it is you want animated -Do you want words to fly in? Click the words. Character to run? Click the character.  When you click a different sidebar will appear.

Finally have your first scene finished! Add a new scene and begin again!
Sometimes when you add a lot of dialogue with a lot of different scenes it starts to overlap.

Very easy to fix! Click the dialogue or the music and drag to fit the scene!

Just a few tips I have found to be helpful...
1. Get in a habit of saving your movie every few minutes.  We had a few freak accidents and lost our videos.
2. let your kiddos explore -they will teach you stuff once they figure it out!
3. Build in time to explore, teach, and create
4. Once the videos are complete video record your screen while the movie is playing so you can keep your videos!  I did this for all of our videos!  Yes it took me a long time BUT they are so happy to have the videos forever!
5. Play, Play, Play with it
6. Email me with questions! I am happy to help!

Here are a few more example we had!  All of the videos are so different and creative!  I highly recommend this site!

We had such a fun time creating these videos!  At one point we were almost done with our 14 day trial and I was trying to get them to finish their videos without rushing them.  So I said "Friends if you would like to come in at recess today and work on your video you may. BUT you do not have to !!" (I hate keeping kids in!!)-After lunch I walked into a lab with ALL of my students (SAY WHAT!) every single child was there working on their video!

If you have any questions please, please, please just ask!!
